CALGARY – Cole MacFarlane scored in the 70th minute and then set up the insurance marker, leading the University of Victoria Vikes over the Calgary Dinos by a score of 2-0 on the turf at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.
With the usual home of the Dinos, the West Varsity Pitch, unplayable due an unexpected snow storm on Saturday morning, both the women's and men's Saturday matches versus the University of Fraser Valley Cascades were postponed to Monday, and left the Sunday matches looking for a place to be played. With the Stampeders off on Sunday, McMahon Stadium sat unused and already shoveled, presenting an ideal venue to be used just across the street from the University of Calgary.
MacFarlane broke an otherwise tight game wide open in the 70th minute, taking advantage of a miscue in the Dinos defense and chipped the ball over a sprawling Dinos netminder #J.P. Crescenzi# to find the far right side of the net. Just two minutes later, the 2008 All-Canadian found himself yet again with ball in open space, this time in a 3-2 situation. Sending a beautiful pass across the crease of Crescenzi, forward Kyle Kostis slammed it home to make it 2-0. MacFarlane, who was a 2008 All-Canadian, padded his points total on Sunday, and now sits with eight on the year, and remains second in Canada West in scoring.
The Dinos had their share of chances on the afternoon, but none of which were as good as a missed opportunity early in the second half. With
David Benavides in off the bench for the Dinos, the first year forward redirected a Dinos throw-in towards the Victoria net, where goaltender Dan Kilpatrick stopped it, but couldn't secure it. With the ball sitting in the crease unprotected,
Joe Long, who played up front for the Dinos on Sunday, snatched it up and with a wide open net rang his shot off the crossbar and out of play. It would prove to be a crucial miss, as it was the last serious chance of the day for Calgary.
After beating their Vancouver Island opponents at home over each of the past three years, the Dinos couldn't do it a fourth time on the unfamiliar turf at McMahon, costing themselves vital points in the standings against a team with whom they are battling for playoff positioning. Coupled with a Saturday victory over Lethbridge, Victoria moved ahead of Calgary by eight points with the win, and moved into third in Canada West. The Dinos do own two games in hand on the Vikes, with a game against the Cascades upcoming on Monday, and currently sit in fifth – five points behind the fourth place Alberta Golden Bears.
In the winning effort, Kilpatrick made seven saves for the Vikes, and moves his team to 7-5-1 on the season. The Vikes close out their season with one more match against the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford next Saturday.
The Dinos fall to 4-5-2, and will finish the peculiar weekend series on Monday against the Cascades. They will remain at home to finish out their season, where the top two teams in Canada West, the UBC Thunderbirds and Trinity Western Spartans, will pay a visit to Calgary on Halloween weekend.
