Bison power play overpowers Dinos

| By:
CALGARY – Riding three power play goals on four attempts, the University of Manitoba Bisons defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 4-1 at the Olympic Oval Saturday night, handing the Dinos their fifth straight loss.

BOX SCORE

Coming into the game, the Dinos were reeling after a 5-1 loss to the Bisons 24 hours earlier. Undeterred, they managed to draw first blood on the stick of Beccy Niehaus at 12:26 in the first. Tanya Morgan and Shannon Davidson drew assists on the goal. Davidson let the initial shot rip letting Neihaus pick off the rebound and stick it past Bisons' goalie, Stacey Corfield.

That attempt would be the only scoring for the Dinos and their only offensive production in the first period, a frame which saw the Bisons rule the shot counter 12-2.

The Bisons would respond later in the period at 18:05 when Calgary's Casey Irving was sitting in the box on a tripping minor. Manitoba's Jordyn Hrehirchuk took this opportunity to even the score when she received the puck in the slot from behind the net. Dinos netminder Jennifer Mallard didn't have time to react as Hrehirchuk put the puck in with assists from Becca King and Amy Coates.

The Bisons went up for good on a goal six minutes into the second period, their only even-strength marker of the evening. Kristy Majeran buried the game winner after a shot ricocheted off a Calgary defender's leg and onto her stick. Majeran made no mistake with the shot which got past Mallard with assists from Hrehirchuk and Rachèle Bosc.

The other two Bisons goals came from Manitoba's highly efficient power play who notched three goals on four attempts. These goals would come from Coates and Hrehirchuk with Becca King receiving assists on both goals and Addia Miles and Coates picking up additional points as well.

In great contrast to the Manitoba power play, the Dinos went 0-for-8 with the extra attacker, including 1:30 of five-on-three in the third period.

“As a team I think that we need to wake up,” Dinos coach Danielle Goyette asserted after the game. “A few of our players think that it's ok to lose a few games because it's our first year in the CIS. That's a mentality that has to change.”

When the dust settled, the Mallard had gotten in front of 25 shots while the Bisons' Stacey Corfield had prevented 16 scoring chances.

Next week the 1-5 Dinos take a week off to regroup before they head to Saskatoon Nov. 6-7 to face the Huskies in the final two of four meetings for those two sides. The Bisons return home with a 2-2 record to face the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend.
