Bisons get revenge with shooutout win

| By:
WINNIPEG - In a 3-2 shootout victory at the Max Bell Arena on Saturday, the No. 3 ranked Manitoba Bisons avenged their loss of the previous night to the Calgary Dinos.

BOX SCORE

The Bisons came into the game on a three-game losing streak after starting the season with four straight home wins. Their record now stands at 5-2-1 for eleven points and they retain their first-place standing in the Canada West conference. The Dinos moved into third place with a 3-1-2 record for eight points.

Manitoba outshot Calgary 14 - 5 in the first period, but the Dinos struck first when Brock Nixon scored with 4:49 left in the period, assisted by Reid Jorgensen and Blake Clement.

Calgary failed to capitalize on a two-man advantage early in the second period, but Manitoba made the most of their second power play opportunity of the period, with Ian Duval's goal at 12:23, assisted by Stephane Lenoski and Brandon Lockerby.

Coming into the third with a 1-1 score, Manitoba didn't let the tie stand for long. They struck again only 12 seconds in, as Duval added another point to his night's total with an assist to Mike Hellyer (Chad Erb also assisted). This was Hellyer's fifth goal of the season and Duval's sixth assist.

The Dinos fought back with 6:20 left in the third, with Reid Jorgensen and Brock Nixon giving more trouble to Manitoba goalie Jesse Deckert with their assist to Torrie Wheat in a scramble in the crease. Deckert made several valiant saves to keep the game tied through the rest of the third.

The game headed into overtime, and when Calgary took a penalty at 1:48, Manitoba had the man advantage, but failed to score. The Bison then gave Calgary an opportunity with a penalty late in the OT at 4:38, but kept them at bay and it was onto the shootout.

In the shootout, the teams both scored in the first round, both goalies made the saves in the second round, and both teams scored again in the third round. In the final sudden death shootout round, Manitoba's Jared Walker scored and Deckert blocked Calgary's last chance to give Manitoba the shootout win. Deckert earned his first CIS victory.

In the full game, Calgary had the slight edge with shots on goal of 38-34. Manitoba were 1-6 on the power play while Calgary went 0-6 with the man advantage.

The Dinos return home to play host to the Regina Cougars next weekend.
