Butler shines as Dinos drop No. 3 Bisons

WINNIPEG - Dustin Butler stopped 28 shots as the Calgary Dinos earned their first road win of the 2009-10 season Friday, dropping the newly No. 3-ranked Manitoba Bisons 2-1 at Max Bell Arena.

It was the third consecutive loss for the Bisons, who started the season with four straight home wins. Their record falls to 4-2-1 for nine points, but they remain in a first-place tie in the Canada West conference with the Alberta Golden Bears. With the victory, the Dinos moved in a three-way tie for third with a 3-1-1 record for seven points.
 
The Dinos capitalized on an strong third period as they stormed back from a 1-0 deficit and took advantage of the power play with two goals with the man advantage. Calgary notched the equalizer with seven minutes into the final frame when defenceman Jerrid Sauer fired a point shot that found the net through a maze of players in front of Bisons¹ netminder Steve Christie.

The visitors finished the comeback, at the 18:50 mark of the third, with a point one-timer by defenceman Dan Ehrman when Bisons alternate captain Kip Workman tried to clear the puck while on the penalty kill put the clearing pass ricochet off the linesman skate and right to Calgary defenceman partner Cory Pritz. Ehrman notched his first goal of the young season.

The Dinos played a good road game, as they did not apply a ton of pressure but kept the Bisons at bay during a scoreless first period.

Manitoba rang a couple of shots off the posts as an omen of more to come. In the second, Manitoba had numerous opportunities on the power play but Butler held his ground until the Herd finally scored when Greg Beller was awarded a penalty shot after Ehrman pulled him down.. It was Beller¹s third goal of the season. After two, Manitoba led 1-0.
 
Calgary started the third with some sustained pressure and was rewarded with a several penalties called on Manitoba and turned the momentum around with the tying goal before winning it late in the third.
 
Calgary went 2-8 on the power play while Manitoba was 0-8 with the man advantage. Manitoba outshot Calgary by a 29-23 margin but the visitors had a 14-8 shot lead in the crucial third period.
 
The teams meet up again Saturday night, with face-off at 6 p.m. MT.
