Vikes draw first blood in weekend series

| By:
CALGARY – The University of Victoria Vikes managed to find the scoreboard in a defensive struggle against the Calgary Dinos Saturday afternoon, earning a 1-0 decision at Hawkings Field.

The loss drops Calgary to a 2-5-2 record while Victoria improves to 4-2-3 on the season.

The match was a hard fought defensive battle with neither team gaining many chances and both goalies coming up big on those scarce offensive moments.

The lone Vikes goal came late in the opening half after a short corner chance was awarded to Victoria. The Vikes took this chance to rip a shot into the pads of Dino goaltender Stephanie Petrowitsch forcing a rebound. Katie Tittler made no mistake on the opportunity and buried the ball in the back of the Calgary goal.

Some of the Dinos' best scoring chances came on the rush with Keira Chicquen and Carolina Romeo leading those charges late in the second half. Unfortunately for the Dinos these plays would come up short as Victoria 'keeper Kaitlyn Williams stopped everything that was thrown at her net.

This loss leaves the Dinos in a close competition with the University of Alberta who currently hold the third and final berth in the CIS championship. Both teams have three games remaining, making makes the final game of this series especially important if the Dinos are to achieve their goal of qualifying for the national tournament..

The second game in this double header opens at Hawkings Field Saturday at 1 p.m.
