LANGLEY, B.C. – The No. 1 Trinity Western University women's soccer team got their eight win of the season with a solid 2-0 victory over the visiting University of Calgary Dinos Friday night at TWU's Spartan Field. The win moves the first place Spartans to 8-1-0, while the loss drops the Dinos to 4-5-0.
BOX SCORE
The Spartans controlled the majority of the play as they outshot the Dinos 11 to four and had a five to two edge in corner kicks.
The opening goal came in the 26th minute off of a redirect by rookie forward Alicia Tesan (Vancouver). TWU for forward Daniela Gerig (Fort Langley, B.C.) started the play when she broke up the left side of the pitch and turned the corner around the outside back. Gerig then sent the ball to the top of the six where Tesan was charging. Tesan got her fifth goal of the season when she beat the Dino defender to the ball and redirected it past Calgary keeper
Kristen Barton (Calgary).
The Spartans made it a two goal lead just over two minutes later. Defender Jillian Dietrich (Calgary) gained possession in the midfield and sent a ball into the middle of the Calgary box to a waiting Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.). Wright controlled the pass and turned and neatly slotted the ball in the lower right corner to give TWU the 2-0 lead in the 28th minute.
The Spartans had much of the play through the first half. TWU outshot Calgary 5-1 in the half and had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
The majority of the second half was played in the Dinos defensive third of the park. TWU nearly got their third goal in the 75th minute when the Spartans Melissa Mobilio (Coquitlam, B.C.) hit a shot that was labeled for the top right corner of the Dinos net. But Calgary's Barton denied Mobilio with a spectacular leap as she deflected the ball over the cross bar and out of play.
The Dinos managed three shots in the half, but the majority were from outside the penalty area. Calgary's best chance came in the 78th minute when the Dinos'
Katie Blundell got open inside the penalty area. The Dino forward struck the ball cleanly, but TWU keeper Kristen Funk (Calgary) was there to make the stop and preserve the two goal lead.
TWU's Funk made three saves to earn the win and her fourth shutout of the season. Calgary's Barton made four saves in the loss.
Next up for the Spartans is the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Game time tomorrow night at TWU's Spartan Field is set for 5 p.m. Meanwhile, the Dinos are off to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds.
