CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team celebrated the Thanksgiving weekend in style Sunday, handing the UBC Thunderbirds just their second loss of the season – and the Dinos' first win over UBC since 2000 – by a 2-1 score at Hawkings Field.
For the second day in a row these teams faced off in winter temperatures and blowing snow. Saturday afternoon, the Dinos' lack of offence was their downfall as they dropped the first game of this series 4-1.
The Dinos opened the scoring at 25:05 after a sustained offensive effort resulted in a short corner. The initial shot on goal was taken by
Courtney Campbell before
Serena Lockhart tipped the ball upwards to avoid UBC's diving goaltender, Dina Bulfone.
The action would continue to be back and forth with both Bulfone and Calgary 'keeper Stephaine Petrowitsch having to stop rushes and short corner shots throughout the match.
The Dinos would go to halftime with the lead and would come close to doubling it a few minutes into the second. That goal, a short corner snapshot from the top of the circle, was disallowed by the umpires.
With their confidence still intact, however, the Dinos would put one more home at 48:20. This goal came from the stick of
Carolina Romeo after she fired a shot off of a short corner. Bulfone caught a piece of itbut couldn't deflect it far enough to prevent the second Calgary goal.
With a 2-0 score against them the T-Birds offence woke up and began to pour the pressure on the Dinos resulting in a short corner and goal at 51:30. The T-Birds' leading scorer, Elise Milosevich, broke Petrowitsch's shutout after she put in a rebound from the short corner attempt.
Despite continued offensive pressure by the T-Birds in the final parts of the game, the Dinos would hang on to claim a 2-1 victory and their second win of the season, improving their record to 2-5-1. UBC falls to a 6-2.
“The basics were here today,” Dinos coach
Jenn Swagar commented after the win. “Yesterday they weren't and that's why we lost.”
The Dinos now move onto their next series against the second ranked University of Victoria Vikes in Calgary while UBC goes home to host the University of Alberta Pandas.
