CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos chalked up another loss to their 2009 record, falling to the UBC Thunderbirds 4-1 amid the sub-zero temperatures and blowing snow of a Calgary October.
The first place T-Birds set the tone early in the game, pushing the Dinos back into their end and keeping the pressure on throughout the game, while the Dinos continued to struggle offensively, with their forwards only managing a single shot on UBC's net.
Despite the offensive discrepancy,
Stephanie Petrowitsch and her defensive cohorts held on valiantly and prevented a number of scoring chances in the opening of the game before UBC's Abigail Raye connected with the netting at 20:08. The play was set up on a T-Bird short corner that saw four short passes inside the Dinos circle result in an out-of-position Dinos netminder and an easy put in.
The Dinos responded immediately to this threat with a goal by
Jessica Downie at 24:12. This goal was on the Dinos' only shot of the game after Downie found herself open at the top of the T-Birds' circle. Not wasting the opportunity, she charged the net and directed a shot off the left post.
Calgary wasn't able to enjoy this feeling for long as at 33:20, UBC struck again. This goal was set up by a shot into the circle by Robyn Pendleton that was tipped above Petrowitsch's head by Elsie Milosevich.
As the snow worsened in the second half so did the Dinos' deficit. UBC would find the back of the net twice more before the timer ran out on goals by Miranda Mann and Robyn Pendleton at 54:00 and 68:50. Mann gained her opportunity when a desperate Dinos defence handed UBC a stroke, which was drained without issue by the UBC striker. Pendleton notched the extra insurance goal with a top corner shot from right in front of the Dinos net.
The Dinos (1-5-1) and T-Birds (6-1-0) face off once more before the weekend concludes, wrapping up their weekend series Sunday afternoon at Hawkings Field.
