Horns top Dinos to earn weekend split

| By:

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. -  For the second consecutive weekend, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women' s basketball team rebounded from a Friday night loss to down a CIS ranked opponent Saturday night with a 79-71 win over the eighth-ranked Calgary Dinos.

BOX SCORE

With the win the Horns improve to 3–13 and inched closer to Calgary in the standings, who fall to 7-9. With six games remaining in the season the Horns playoff hopes are slim, but they now only trail Calgary by four games for the final post season berth in the Central Division.

The Horns used a balanced attack with five players hitting for double digits and never buckled under the Dinos pressure.

For the first 20 minutes, the teams traded baskets and runs with neither team lead by more than five points and when the dust settled on the opening half, the Horns led 36-33

Despite never trailing in the second half, it took until the final quarter for the Horns to create any breathing room between themselves and the Dinos. With three minutes played in the final quarter, the Horns were finally able to push their lead to double-digits at 11 and increase their lead to as many as 14 points before settling for the 8 point victory.

Freshman Courtney Heinricks (Dunmore, AB, 1st) had her best game in Pronghorn blue with 15 points to tie the game and team lead. Hannah Blanchette (Calgary, AB, 3rd) completed a solid weekend with 15 points and 9 rebounds, after leading the team last night with 19 points.

Megan Lang (Calgary, AB, 2nd) and Whitney Haswell (Oakville, ON, 5th) each had 15 points for the Dinos, with Haswell completing the double-double, collecting 12 rebounds.

The Horns remain at home next weekend, hosting the Trinity Western Spartans and Simon Fraser Clan, while the Calgary Dinos will face the same two teams but face the Clan Friday night and Spartans Saturday.
