REGINA - A last-minute goal by Tiffany Gyurek gave the University of Regina's women's soccer team a 1-1 tie against the Calgary Dinos on Saturday afternoon at the U of R Field.
With only seconds to go before injury time, fourth-year forward Tarina Mayer crossed the ball from the right, finding Gyurek in the six-yard box. Gyurek made no mistake, knocking the ball into the net to notch the first goal of her CIS career.
"We had scoring opportunities through the entire match," Cougars head coach Bob Maltman said. "We showed composure and ability and we were able to maintain that for 90 minutes today."
The Dinos had gone ahead early in the second half, after Tessa Miller fed Cayla Scavo for the game's opening goal in the 48th minute. Both teams had eight shot attempts during the match.
Michelle Anderson played in the net for Regina, making four saves to preserve the tie for the Cougars. Courtney Heffernan started the game at keeper for Calgary, but was replaced by Kristen Barton in the 82nd minute.
Both teams move to 0-0-1 on the season after the tie.
The Dinos will travel to Winnipeg today for a Sunday match with Manitoba, while the Cougars will square off with Lethbridge (0-1-0) on Sunday at noon at the U of R Field.
