Spartans hang on to shut out Dinos

| By:

LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western University midfielder Patrick Kelly (5th year, Cochrane, Alta.) scored the lone goal in the sixth minute as the Spartans outlasted the visiting University of Calgary Dinos 1-0 Saturday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus. The win moves the #5 ranked Spartans to 2-0-0 in Canada West conference play, while the loss keeps the Dinos winless at 0-2-0.

Kelly scored the lone goal with a beautiful shot over Calgary keeper #J.P. Crescenzi# (Calgary). Spartan forward Adrian Kekec (5th year, Burnaby, B.C.) set up the goal when he sent a chip over the back line of the Dinos defense to spring Kelly, who ran onto the ball and was able to go in alone on the Calgary net.

In the first half TWU keeper Andrew Kowan (Richmond, B.C.) was spectacular in net for the Spartans. The second year keeper made five saves to keep the visiting Dinos off of the score sheet and keep TWU up 1-0 at the break.

The second half was just as gritty as the first as each team battled to control the flow of the match. The Spartans increased their intensity as the half progressed and tested Calgary's Crescenzi, but were unable to get the insurance marker.

As the clock wound down TWU's Kowan continued his strong play as the Spartans secured the 1-0 win.

Kowan was the Spartans Player of the Game, while Calgary defender Joe Long (Bristol, Eng.) was named the Dinos' Player of the Game.

Kowan made seven saves to record the victory, while JP Crescenzi made five saves in the loss.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Thursday, September 11. Match time at TWU is set for 7:15 p.m.
