Soccer Dinos earn first win over southern rivals

| By:

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - On a sunny and blustery fall afternoon, the visiting Calgary Dinos earned their first conference win of the season with a decisive 5-1 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

The Dinos dictated the play early, as a uninspired Horns team struggled to apply any pressure on the visitors.

An ill timed offside trap by the Horns allowed Tessa Miller (Calgary, AB, 1st) to break free. In all alone on Horns keeper Megan Lumley (Lethbridge, AB, 5th) Miller made no mistake, hitting the bottom right corner. The Dinos extended their lead before the half was out. Following a cross, Lindsay Burrowes (Calgary, AB, 3rd) found herself all alone and beat Lumely to the lower corner.

The second half start eerily similar for the Horns with the Dinos picking up an early goal to extend the lead to three, off the foot of Miller, for her second of the game.

In the 69th minute, it look as if the Horns would get back in the game on a penalty, but Andrea Nippard (Calgary, AB, 2nd) curled her shot wide left.

Under three minutes later, the Dinos capitalized again on another mistimed trap and Saaraa Premji (Calgary, AB, 2nd) chipped the ball over a sliding Lumley on the breakaway.

Burrows collected her second of the game to up the lead to five, before freshman Marley Walker (Coaldale, AB) would get the Horns on the board. Walker and Dinos keeper Kristen Barton (Calgary, AB, 1st) collided on a cross and the ball ricocheted off Walker and behind Barton.

With the loss the Horns fall to 2-4-1, while the Dinos improve to 1-4-2. These same two teams square off tomorrow in the back half of the home and home series.
