'Horns drop Dinos in front end of home-and-home

| By:

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - A game with two teams searching for their first wins of the season started very tentatively, with the majority of the opening 20 minutes being played between the 18 yard boxes. Even with three consecutive corner kicks for the Horns, chances were minimal for both sides early.  Conversions off two set pieces, one in each half, propelled the Horns to a 2-1 victory.

Horns senior Marcus Karpati (Victoria, BC, 5th) had the first great opportunity but his header was cleared off the line by a Dino defender. Later, a dangerous looking strike from well outside the box by Iain Cain (Lethbridge, AB, 5th) found the wood work.

The Horns were finally rewarded in the 41st minute off a set piece. Karpati's free kick curled past the Dinos wall and into the low right corner from just outside the penalty area. The Horns held a 12-4 shot advantage in the opening half but only forced Dino keeper Mike Arnieri (Edmonton, AB, 1st) into making four saves.

The second half had the teams trade chances and corner kicks early, but the Horns were able to capitalize on another set piece to double the score in the 66th minute. Greg Remijn's (Cranford, AB, 4th) strike from just outside the box eluded the Dinos wall and hit the right side of the net to the surprise of Arnieri.

After the Horns second goal, the pace slowed until the final five minutes and the Dinos made the game interesting after Carlos Cruz (Calgary, AB, 5th) long range strike eluded the Horns keeper Colin Pattison (Calgary, AB, 2nd). Despite four minutes of extra time, the Dinos never threatened to tie the score.

With the win the Horns improve to 1-5-1, while the Dinos remain winless at 0-5-2. These same two teams square off tomorrow in Calgary in the second game of the home and home series.
