CALGARY – Torrie Wheat scored a natural hat trick in the third period and added a fourth goal late as the Calgary Dinos routed the UBC Thunderbirds 10-1 Saturday at Father David Bauer Arena.
Wheat's first three goals came just 5:50 apart in the early stages of the third, sparking a six-goal outburst by the Dinos in the final frame that chased UBC netminder Gerry Festa from the goal.
“We let up a little at the end of the second, so we wanted to make sure we had a good start to the third,” said Wheat, who scored six goals on the season-opening weekend and leads the Canada West point standings. “I was fortunate enough to get some lucky bounces, and they all went in for me, which is pretty rare.”
The four goals for Wheat came on his only four shots of the evening.
Defenceman Travis Friedley opened the scoring for Calgary early with his first of two on the night at 2:29 of the first period, and the Dinos carried the play for the remainder of the night. Friedley added a second goal in the opening minute of the second period.
Despite the lopsided score, Dinos coach Scott Atkinson drew parallels to the series opener, a 4-3 UBC victory Friday night.
“I thought they were similar games, we just got a better result tonight,” he said. “We played well last night and didn't get the result, and we need to hold ourselves accountable for those results.
“We saw a snapshot of what our team could do tonight. Obviously things were going our way, but I think we have a very good team and we have to focus on results. Getting a power play goal early was a big help, it gives you confidence and you always play better from in front.”
The Dinos had gone up 4-0 midway through the third period when UBC scored their lone goal of the game, a slapper from the point by Theran Yeo that found its way through traffic and past Calgary goaltender Dustin Butler on the power play, and the 4-1 score stood heading into the third period.
Teegan Moore got the scoring started for Calgary in the third, burying a nice pass from Logan Gorsalitz past Festa on the power play. Wheat scored his first just 26 seconds later, after which UBC coach Milan Dragicevic pulled Festa in favour of rookie Joe Rodwell. He fared little better as the Dinos peppered the UBC net with 22 shots in the period, including four more goals – three from Wheat and one from Reid Jorgensen.
After a brilliant 39-save outing Friday night, Festa was lit up for six goals on 23 shots Saturday night by a Calgary offence that went 4-for-9 with the man advantage.
Jorgensen finished with a goal and three helpers on the night, while Friedley, Gorsalitz, Jevon Desautels, Aaron Richards, and Brock Nixon also had multiple-point outings for Calgary.
The final two Calgary goals came on a five-minute power play opportunity after UBC forward John Flatters received 17 minutes in penalties, including a major for fighting, in an altercation with Desautels behind the Thunderbirds' net. Desautels was given a two-minute roughing penalty in the incident.
The T-Birds do not return to Canada West play until Oct. 17, a two-game series against Alberta in Vancouver. UBC embarks on a four-game non-conference schedule against NCAA schools in the next two weekends, including a trip to Alaska to take on Alaska-Fairbanks and Alaska-Anchorage next weekend.
Calgary also has next weekend off from conference competition and will play in the SAIT Eyeopener tournament across town. The Dinos' next Canada West action goes a week later in a home-and-home series against the Alberta Golden Bears, beginning Friday, Oct. 10 in Edmonton and concluding the following night at Father David Bauer Arena.
