VICTORIA - All-Canadian Alli Bach ended a second half of near misses and frustration, scoring the go-ahead-goal in the 86th minute to lead the UVic Vikes women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Dinos.
Bach's game winner came amongst an on-slaught of pressure, with the Vikes having numerous golden opportunities throughout the second half to take the lead.
Senior Sarah Cameron provided the assist on the elusive goal, sending a cross that bounced over a Dinos defender and directly in front of a streaking Bach. The Parksville native headed the ball past the charging Dinos keeper
Kristen Barton. The goal was Bach's first of the year. Last season, the senior tallied 13 goals to capture the Canada West scoring title.
The late goal seemed to deflate the winless Dinos, as three minutes later Vikes striker Leigh Quinlan provided the insurance marker, beating Barton five-hole with a shot from just inside the box.
The momentum from the Vikes 4-0 win on Saturday carried over in the early moments of the contest, with Kaitlyn Hunter scoring after just three minutes had elapsed. The Vancouver native one-timed a cross home with her left foot.
The shot went through a maze of players before finding the bottom left corner of the goal.
Calgary was quick to tie it up, finding the equalizer off a set piece in the 13th minute.
Saaraa Premji snuck away from her marker and tipped home a
Lindsay Burrowes cross.
The win completed the first weekend sweep for the Vikes and moved their record to 4-2-0. The Dinos remain winless at 0-4-2.
The Vikes will look to continue their recent string of success when they hit the road next weekend to take on the Alberta Pandas and Saskatchewan Huskies. Calgary returns to Southern Alberta for a home-and-home series with the Pronghorns, beginning Saturday afternoon in Lethbridge.
