VICTORIA - Although it wasn't the result that the first-placed UVic Vikes men's soccer team had hoped for Sunday afternoon, the 1-1 draw against the Calgary Dinos was good enough to stretch the Vikes unbeaten streak to five games.
The unbeaten streak is the Vikes longest since the 2004 campaign, the same year that they last captured the CIS National Championship. The No. 6 ranked Vikes are also currently enjoying their highest national ranking since the championship winning season.
The Vikes had numerous chances to score the go-ahead goal in the second half but were unable to manufacture a game winner. The closest chance came in the 73rd minute when rookie Jordie Oberg poked a shot that beat Dinos 'keeper #J.P. Crescenzi#, but not the right post. The rebound off the post hit a Dinos defender and deflected just inches wide.
The Vikes buzzed around the Dinos end all second half, firing 15 shots at the Dinos net. The Vikes however, only managed to direct three of those shots on target.
Calgary used a corner kick in the 9th minute to open the scoring. Defender
Jeff Marsden pinched up on the play and used his head to flick home the cross from Tameet Singh. The goal snapped Vikes 'keeper Dan Kilpatrick shutout streak at four games. The All-Star goalie entered the game riding a streak of 225 minutes without letting up a goal.
The lead didn¹t last long however, as Vikes striker Cole McFarlane provided the equalizer just two minutes after the restart. McFarlane, who was a threat to score every time he touched the ball Sunday afternoon, blocked a clearance attempt and dangled his way into the box, before neatly tucking his shot into the bottom corner of the net. The goal was the All-Canadians third of the weekend and fifth on the year.
The tie was the Vikes first draw of the year and moved their record to 4-1-1, while the Dinos share the same record as their women counterparts, with both teams sitting winless at 0-4-2.
The Vikes next three contests will be on the road. Next weekend the Vikes will look to avenge their only loss of the season when they travel to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Golden Bears. The weekend road trip will also see the Vikes take on the Saskatchewan Huskies. The Vikes will conclude their time on the road on October 4th, when they take the ferry ride to the mainland to take on the No. 3 ranked UBC Thunderbirds.
The Dinos, meanwhile, return home for a home-and-home series with the Lethbridge Pronghorns. The weekend begins Saturday in Lethbridge, concluding Sunday afternoon on the UC campus. Kickoff goes at 2:15 p.m.
