VANCOUVER – A pair of late goals made it two shutout wins in a row for the UBC Thunderbirds, as they downed the Calgary Dinos 2-0 on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Thunderbird Park.
The T-Birds (3-0-2) finally got on the board in the 79th minute after Lisa Furutani capped off a flurry of chances with her first goal of the year. Her opportunity came after Caitlin Davie's header came back off the post and rolled across the goal line, and she made the most of it, banging the ball past Calgary (0-3-2) keeper Kristen Barton to put her side up 1-0.
“We had a little bit of bad luck with all the shots off the post, but at least we were creating chances” said UBC coach Dick Mosher. “We didn't finish particularly well but we certainly did well enough to get the three points.”
Carmen Lindsay doubled the lead just before the final whistle thanks to another opportunity created by Davie, who stole the ball from a Calgary defender at the edge of the 18 yard box and swung in a cross that eluded Barton. Lindsay calmly slotted the ball into the open net to secure the win for UBC.
It took the T-Birds a while to get out of the starting gate, as they were unable to generate many scoring chances in the first half. The second half was a different story entirely, as the T-Birds were all over the Dinos, outshooting them 20-2.
“I think it was just a matter of us having more desperation in our game,” said Mosher. “We didn't want the one point because one point isn't much good to you. It was the team desire to go for the three points that gave us a lot more energy in the second half, and certainly more chances too.”
The T-Birds will wrap up their home-stand tomorrow when they battle the Lethbridge Pronghorns at Thunderbird Park at 12:00 p.m.
