CALGARY – Second year midfielder Josh Northey (Saskatoon) scored two unanswered goals, and goaltender Simon Kluge (1st, Saskatoon) was excellent in the second half as the Huskies edged the Dinos in Calgary, 2-1.
After a first half where neither team found themselves with many scoring chances, the Dinos broke the game open with halfback Sean Makins (2nd, Calgary) putting a spectacular pass off of a free kick from Joe Long (1st, Great Britain) behind Kluge in the 53rd minute.
Not to be outdone, the Huskies immediately answered with a furious rush down the field, where Northey potted his first goal in the corner of the net just 30 seconds after the Dinos goal. Northey then put the game away for the Huskies midway through the second half with a phenomenal shot that Dinos goaltender Rick Urbanczyk (5th, Calgary) had no chance on.
Northey, who was excellent for the Huskies throughout the whole game, was able to corral a game MVP award for his efforts.
The Dinos managed seven shots on goal in the second half, and were consistently swarming the Saskatchewan zone. However, after the first goal by Makins, Huskie goaltender Simon Kluge simply refused to let the game get away from Saskatchewan, providing the difference in the end. Calgary head coach Andy Gibbs knows that the Dinos may have let one slip away.
“It was a game of missed chances,” said Gibbs. “We had tons of missed opportunities in the second half, and we know we need to capitalize on these. We can't go home after each game complaining of missed chances, we need to eventually figure it out and pound the back of the net.”
“We should know better to let Northey get open those two times as well,” continued Gibbs. “He got the best of us today, but we know him, and that shouldn't have happened.”
With their first win of the season, the Huskies go back home with confidence to face the Fraser Valley Cascades and the reigning Canada West Champions Trinity Western Spartans next weekend in Saskatoon.
The Dinos are now winless this season, and are faced with the unenviable task of travelling west to face league powerhouses UBC and Victoria this upcoming weekend. The following weekend, they face a home and home series with their southern rivals, the Lethbridge Pronghorns, to round out the month of September.
