CALGARY – The University of Victoria Vikes used three second-half goals to defeat the Calgary Dinos 4-1 Sunday, completing a sweep of the weekend series between the two teams at Hawkings Field.
Kaitlin Jacobs scored both the game-winner and the insurance marker for Victoria, who move to 2-0 on the young Canada West season, while Calgary falls to 0-2. Jacobs' first broke a 1-1 halftime deadlock in the 47th minute when she converted a Vikes short corner opportunity in a second half where the field was tilted greatly in the visitors' favour. Her second came with just five minutes remaining in the game, sealing the victory for Victoria.
Natalie Wise put the icing on the cake for the Vikes just a minute later with her first of the season in the 66th minute.
While the Dinos did not show many signs of life in the second half, the first half was played much more evenly. Courtney Low opened the scoring for Victoria, potting her second of the season 15 minutes into the game, but Kaitlyn Longworth replied for Calgary before the end of the half, scoring from a corner opportunity in the 29th minute.
While both B.C.-based teams made trips to visit Alberta this weekend, the opposite will be true in one week's time. Victoria returns home to face the Alberta Pandas for a two-game weekend set, while Calgary will head to Vancouver to visit the UBC Thunderbirds, the first of two road weekends for the Dinos. Coach Jenn Swagar and the Dinos make their next appearance at home Oct. 4-5 against UBC.
