Bowles, 'Horns finish sweep of Dinos

| By:

CALGARY - Lethbridge Pronghorns goalkeeper Scott Bowles stopped 27 Dinos shots in solid fashion en route to a 2-0 Lethbridge win in Calgary. The Pronghorns improve to 10-6 going into the holiday break, while Calgary drops to 6-9-1.

BOX SCORE

The University of Calgary Dinos had fantastic offensive energy in the first two periods, peppering Bowles with 21 shots. Two of their best opportunities came on a five on three situation midway through the second period, but it was Bowles shutting the door that proved to be the turning point of the game.

With a tremendous sprawling glove save on a Travis Friedley slapshot, and an equally impressive kick save on Reid Jorgensen twenty seconds later, Bowles gave his Pronghorns new life as he single handedly dissipated the two-man advantage for the Dinos. Bowles earned the game's first star for his efforts on the night.

Despite their two near-goals, Jorgensen and Friedley led the Dinos offensive attack on the night, with four shots apiece. Forwards Brett O'Malley, Adam Redmond and Jevon Desautels were also active for Calgary, each registering three shots during the game.

While on their heels early in the game, Lethbridge stuck to their plan and never wavered in their confidence. With solid goaltending behind them, their patience and grit ultimately paid off with eight minutes left in the game, with Logan Lavoratto tipping a Paul McDonald shot past Dinos goalkeeper Dustin Butler. While the Lavoratto goal turned out to be enough for the 'Horns, Steve Zmudczynski gave his squad some added insurance with his eighth goal of the season.

Butler, who was very solid for the majority of the match with 23 saves, takes the loss for the Dinos, who are now 1-7-1 in their last nine games.

In the defeat, the Dinos received determined performances from defensemen Dan Ehrman and Joel Eisenkirch, who both made their presence known physically throughout the game.

The Pronghorns now sit comfortably in third place in Canada West, and have already eclipsed their 2007/2008 win total with ten only halfway through the season.  The Pronghorns start their winter semester at home against the Regina Cougars.

The Dinos will be hoping that their holiday break can put the stops to a recent downward turn in the Canada West standings. With a critical home and home series looming against the Alberta Golden Bears to kick off 2009, the Dinos will need to rest up and regroup. Calgary will host the second game of the weekend series on Sunday, Jan. 11.
