CALGARY - Fresh off of a spilt series with the SAIT Trojans, the Dinos women's hockey team will try to give themselves breathing room at the top of the ACAC standings this weekend as they play their third game in a row against their cross-town rivals on Saturday night.
SAIT took a lead in the series and the standings after game one of last weekend's series besting the Dinos 3-2 at the SAIT campus centre. The loss was avenged the next evening when the Dinos took SAIT back down to second in the ACAC after a 3-2 victory at the Olympic Oval.
Rookie Megan Frohaug commented following the 3-2 victory about the importance of this weekend, “The game next Saturday is going to be a huge game to see who's first in the league...it's important.”
The Dinos' scoring has been spread throughout the team all year with only Elana Lovell in the ACAC's top 15 scorers; last weekend the DInos saw points from nine different players and Frohaug was the only player with more than one point. SAIT, on the other hand has relied heavily on veterans Tonya Faasse and Emily Burton for their scoring chances; this duo leads the league with six goals each.
Saturday saw the Dinos penalty kill struggle somewhat, giving up just its second goal this season. SAIT has continued to struggle in this department as they sit at the bottom of the league allowing seven goals on 35 penalty kills. Neither team has seen significant powerplay production throughout the season lingering in the bottom half of the league.
Currently the Dinos sit two points above SAIT at 8-2-0 in the standings and can make that gap wider with a win on Saturday night. The Trojans sit at 7-2-0 and can bring themselves back into a tie for first with a win.
Dinos captain Beccy Niehaus summed up this rivalry after Saturday's game, “With this team we go back and forth, it will never be a blowout.”
The game goes Saturday at 7 p.m. on the SAIT Campus Centre ice.
