SASKATOON - The visiting No. 5 ranked University of Calgary Dinos scored 47 second half points to take a 90-80 victory from the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night in Saskatoon.
BOX SCORE
The win was the eighth in a row by the Dinos and it also helped them complete a two-game sweep of their division rival Huskies, winning 91-66 a night earlier. The Dinos now sit with a Canada West-best 9-1 record, while the Huskies drop to a Central Division fourth place 2-6.
Calgary's Ross Bekkering and Henry Bekkering led the charge for their team combining for 52 — 22 and 30 respectively. Showron Glover was the best in the game for the Huskies scoring 25 points, followed by Nolan Brudehl with 17 points.
“We stayed with Calgary through the first half but just couldn't close the game in the second half,” said Huskie head coach Greg Jockims. “Calgary is a good team and our young team learned some lessons.”
The Huskies held a four point 47-43 lead heading into the second half of the game and that's when Calgary took over scoring 28 points in the third quarter.
Saskatchewan added to the lead in the first possession of the third quarter when Troy Gottselig hit a jump shot from the top left hand side of the paint and Brudehl did the same just seconds later. Calgary answered with two three-point plays from the Bekkering's to pull within two points at 51-49. The Dinos took the lead with the same exact three point shot from the elder Bekkering.
Calgary's lead grew to 60-54 before Brudehl hit two three point shots to notch the game at 60. But Calgary quickly regained another six-point lead that grew to nine with another three point shot from Ross Bekkering. Down 71-63 at end of the third quarter, Glover was fouled on a three point shot. He hit all three to pull his team to 71-66.
Calgary started the fourth quarter with 14 straight points to build an 85-67 lead. Gottselig finally got the Huskies on the board at 5:40 with a jump shot. The Huskies pulled back within 10 points at 88-78 with just 1:46 left in the game but that's as close as they could come.
The Huskies remain at home to host the University of Manitoba Bisons and the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on the last weekend of Canada West action in the first semester next Friday and Saturday. Calgary has a bye.
