CALGARY - The Dinos women's hockey team is set to begin a marathon series against the SAIT Trojans this weekend. The two teams meet five times this season and three of those matches occur in the next two weeks.
Katie Urness posted a shutout for the Dinos in their last game and commented on the upcoming matchup, “SAIT's always a good rivalry, we play them enough. It'll be a good game, they're always good games.”
This match will likely be a heated one because this is the first non-exhibition match between these two squads since the Dinos eliminated the Trojans from the semi-finals in last year's playoffs. That series was a marathon affair that spanned 14 periods over a weekend of three games. Leanne Legere scored the series-ending goal in triple overtime of game three to advance the Dinos to the finals.
This match holds importance for this season as well, the Dinos occupy first spot and the Trojans second with one loss apiece; whoever wins this series will hold the top spot in the ACAC going into the semester break.
On the penalty kill the Dinos have been a force this season, allowing only two powerplay goals on 40 chances. Their powerplay, however, is not as dominating, achieving only five goals in 47 opportunities. SAIT's powerplay hasn't done much better with three goals on 38 chances and their penalty kill is the worst in the league with 28 kills on 35 powerplays. SAIT's strength has been with their big three scorers: Emily Burton, Heidi Kleinasser and Tonya Faasse who are on top of the ACAC for goals scored and points earned.
This series is unique in that it is three games over two weekends. SAIT hosts the first and last game at their Campus Centre on Nov. 21st and 29th; both games start at 7 p.m. The only Dinos home game goes Nov. 22 starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Olympic Oval.
