CALGARY - The Calgary Dinos jumped out to an 18-0 start against the Lethbridge Pronghorns and never looked back, waxing their southern rivals 86-52 at home.
The much talked about foursome of
Henry Bekkering,
Ross Bekkering,
Robbie Sihota and
Tyler Fidler did not disappoint their home crowd on Saturday, accounting for 73 of the Dinos' 86 points. The elder Bekkering brother, Henry, led the charge with 23 points.
Perhaps more impressive was the quality of ball movement amongst the four, creating many spectacular odd man rush opportunities in the open court. The defining moment of such entertainment came courtesy of Fidler, who in traffic spun 360 degrees in the air before dishing off to a wide open
Ross Bekkering, who ended the third quarter with the dunk. Ross finished with 13 strong boards to go along with 18 points.
Shooting a blistering 60% from the floor, the Dinos' offensive explosion comes after a fairly mediocre shooting night on Friday. This was something in which Head Coach
Dan Vanhooren was happy to see.
"That kind of tempo is what we needed. It's nice to be able to distribute the ball between four guys and not have one guy the focus. Those four guys are invaluable to us, and will continue to be," said coach Vanhooren.
Vanhooren also credited the play of his rookie point guard
Andy Rochon, who was very successful in leading Calgary's athletic offense.
"I thought Andy was awesome for us. Coming off the bench, his minutes were great. That was one of his best performances"
For the 'Horns, they simply could not come back from a slow start to the game where they spotted their opponents 18 points before scoring. Lethbridge struggled with their shooting again on Saturday, making only 25% of their field goals.
The Pronghorns did show impressive resolve in attempting to climb back into the game, managing to claw to within six points of the Dinos in the second quarter. This was the closest the Pronghorns would come during the game.
Lethbridge recieved another strong performance from Danhue Lawrence, who double dipped in double digits, nabbing 16 points and ten rebounds. Shawn Nelson had three shots from downtown amongst his 14 points, and Derek Waldner grabbed seven rebounds to go along with ten points.
Lethbridge will host the Alberta Golden Bears next weekend, who are currently fighting with the Saskatchewan Huskies in the bottom of the Central Division. Now 3-5, the Pronghorns will need to be on their game to keep sole possession of second place.
The Dinos move to an impressive 7-1 on the season, and will jump on a bus to Saskatoon next weekend, where they tip-off against the Huskies in their tough gym.
