CALGARY- In what was a game of many turnovers and offensive struggles, the Calgary Dinos
were able to overcome numerous deficits to beat the Lethbridge Pronghorns 67-62 in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
Neither team had much luck at all holding on to the ball Saturday night, as both teams combined for 51 total turnovers. With only 25 of those coming by way of the defensive steal, both Calgary and Lethbridge struggled to avoid sloppiness. Tough defensive intensity from both teams was apparent throughout the night, perhaps another indication of the high turnover rate.
Shooting also proved to be a difficult task for both squads, as both clubs shot in the 33% range from the floor, and neither team was consistent from the free throw line. While uncharacteristic of the high scoring Dinos, this is the second straight tough shooting night for Lethbridge, who could not find their form in the vibrant atmosphere of the Jack Simpson Gym.
The deciding factor between the two teams in the tightly contested contest could very well have been in the rebounding department, in which Calgary owned a decided edge. In particular, Calgary owned an 18-12 advantage on the offensive glass, providing plenty of second chance opportunities.
Whitney Haswell had a double-double for the Dinos, notching herself ten points to go along with 13 rebounds. Haswell was very active on defence, leading the Dinos with four steals.
Ashley Hill was excellent once again for Calgary, scoring 15 points in her second solid performance in as many nights. Also finding the double digits in scoring was Courtney Coyle, who chipped in with ten.
The Pronghorns got another very good performance from their main threat, Lauren Taal, who rang in 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Similar to friday night in Calgary, her sidekick Kenzie Sheen was a threat for the 'Horns down low, scoring ten points and grabbing nine rebounds.
With the loss, the 'Horns drop to 1-7 on the season and will get set to host the Alberta Pandas next weekend. The Pandas dropped to third in the Central Division with another loss to Saskatchewan, creating a potential weekend matchup for third place in the division.
With the weekend sweep, the Calgary Dinos improve to 6-2 in Canada West Play, and extend their Central Division lead to four points in the standings. The Dinos go on the road next weekend to Saskatoon for a very important weekend series with the second place Saskatchewan Huskies.
