Defence dominates as Dinos dump Cascades

| By:

CALGARY – An early goal from Calgary Dinos midfielder Lindsay Burrowes (3rd, Calgary) and some impressive Dinos defense was enough to hold off the University of Fraser Valley Cascades, as they took a 1-0 win amongst cold winds in Calgary.

Burrowes, who is coming off an impressive performance last weekend versus the Lethbridge Pronghorns, was credited with the game winner at just the 13 minute mark of the first half. Her corner kick took a Dino bounce off of a Cascade defender which then beat goaltender Chantelle Giagioni (1st, Pitt Meadows, BC) for the deciding goal.

The Dinos, who improve to 3-5-2 on the season with the win, were impressive on defense, only allowing two Fraser Valley shots on goal during the match. Goalkeeper Kristen Barton (1st, Calgary) took care of both Cascade shots, earning the shutout victory.

Calgary winds may have earned a small part of the victory on Sunday as strong gusts of wind refused to cooperate with either team throughout the duration of the match. Neither team found much success at all moving the ball through the air, as Calgary was only able to muster up five shots on goal of their own.

Despite the rather bizarre conditions, Calgary head coach Robin Slot is perfectly fine taking the win as they continue their playoff push.

“It was pretty ugly out there today, and that wind certainly didn't help the flow of the game. We talked about needing to get better on defense, and we definitely did today. We didn't really give them any real chances, so that is positive,” said Slot.

“We got a bit of a lucky goal there from Lindsay (Burrowes), but you know what, we're going to take it.”

The Cascades, who fall to 2-4-2 on the year, return home briefly before travelling to UBC and U Vic next weekend to play the west coast powers as they fight for their playoff lives.

With the big win, and a Saskatchewan Huskies loss on Sunday, the Dinos find themselves sitting tied with the Huskies in that coveted sixth spot in the Canada West. As only the top six teams from the Canada West move to the playoffs, the Dinos are now in a formidable position moving forward.

The lady Dinos can now take a deep breath and relax for a little bit, as they get the weekend off from soccer. The following weekend, they host the Manitoba Bisons on the West Varsity Soccer Pitch on October 18th, followed by the Regina Cougars on October 19th.
