CALGARY – A second half surge from the Calgary Dinos wasn't enough as the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds hung on for a 3-2 win on a windy day in Calgary.
The T-Birds simply dominated the first half, taking a 3-0 lead over the Dinos into the break. Elise Milosevich (2nd, Duncan, BC) scored twice for UBC, scoring the first goal of the game, and then the eventual game winner in the 28th minute of the first half. Victoria Pearson (2nd, Tsawassen, BC) scored in between, making good on a rocket off of a short corner play.
The Dinos turned it around quickly in the second half, scoring two goals right after the other in the 44th and 49th minute. Serena Lockhart (1st, Cobble Hill, BC) and Kaelyn Barrie (4th, Calgary) scored the respective goals for Calgary. While the Dinos were not able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game, coach Jenn Swagar was still pleased with her team's second half effort.
“The first half was not good, that's for sure. UBC pressured us the whole half and we couldn't generate anything,” Swagar explained. “We ultimately play better when we can get out and run, and we were able to do that in the second half. We had way more chances because we were able to send the ball down and chase it, as opposed to being stuck on our heels in our end. We just need to do this more often.”
For the T-Birds, they now take a commanding Canada West lead. Their win over the Dinos, in addition to a 1-0 Victoria loss to Alberta on Sunday puts them nine points up on the second place Victoria Vikes. UBC travels to Victoria next weekend for a 2 game set.
The Dinos meanwhile will host the Alberta Pandas on Hawkings field next weekend. The Dinos will need two wins over the Pandas and then some to have any chance at a CIS playoff berth.
