Hard-fought game goes to Spartans

CALGARY – On a cold and cloudy Saturday in Calgary, the University of Calgary Dinos and the Trinity Western Spartans squared off in women's soccer action, competing all the way to the final whistle. Despite a late flurry of shots and opportunities by the Dinos in the second half, two second half goals from the Spartans lifted the team to a 4-2 victory.

The first half saw the two teams trade goals twice, as they went into the break deadlocked at 2-2. The second half brought an entertaining battle, as both teams had plenty of opportunities throughout. A goal in the 59th minute from Alexi Foster (1st, Fort Langley BC) proved to be the difference for Trinity Western, as she put one behind a confused Calgary goalie Courtney Heffernan (3rd, Calgary). A late goal in the 89th minute from Nikki Wright (1st, Cloverdale, BC) iced it for Trinity Western. This was Wright's second goal of the match, as she previously scored on a spectacular diving header earlier in the first half.

Heffernan and the Calgary defense were caught off guard on the game winner, as they assumed Foster to be offside on the play. However no call was made, and Foster took full advantage.

Goal scorers for the Dinos were Katie McKilligan (3rd, West Vancouver) and Tessa Miller (1st, Calgary). Miller's goal late in the first half, which bounced in off the post after squeaking past Spartan goaltender Kristen Funk (1st, Calgary), was her third in three games.

The Dinos, who are now 2-5-2 on the season, are disappointed with the loss; however keep their heads high in defeat.

“We were definitely disappointed with our slow start to the game, again,” said Lindsay Burrowes, a 3rd year midfielder for the Dinos. “We can't put ourselves in early holes like that, and we need to be coming out stronger.”

“We're beginning to believe in our team and each other more and more, so it is becoming easier to come together in defeat,” continued Burrowes (Calgary). “Hopefully tomorrow we can come out harder and faster right from the start.”

For the Spartans, the victory keeps their unbeaten record intact, as they move to 5-0-2 on the year. On Sunday the Spartans will travel south to faceoff against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

The Dinos invite the University of Fraser Valley Cascades the West Varsity Soccer pitch on Sunday, where they will face off at noon. The Cascades are coming off of a 2-2 tie against the Pronghorns in Lethbridge.
