CALGARY – An intense and chippy match in Calgary between the Dinos and the Trinity Western Spartans proved to be no contest, as a motivated Spartans team pounded the Dinos 3-0 on the University of Calgary West Varsity Soccer Pitch.
A late first half goal by Spartan Daniel Lowen (2nd, Langley) seemed to deflate the Dinos spirit, as they returned to the field after the break with little energy. The Spartans took full advantage of the Dinos in the second half, scoring two more for extra insurance, with Adrain Kekec (5th, Burnaby) and Jordan Hart (3rd, Bellingham, WA) finding the back of the net.
After the game, Dinos head coach Andrew Gibbs was quite disappointed in his team's lack of competitiveness.
“We were terrible. That was the worst effort our team has shown here at home in 3-5 years,” said Gibbs.
“We had a disallowed goal in the first two minutes, and we simply couldn't bounce back. Their (Trinity Western) goal in the final two minutes of the first half got right to our heads, and we couldn't snap out of it. We were terrible. They played a great game, we didn't.”
Aside from the early disallowed goal the Dinos, they were simply unable to put any meaningful shot on goal throughout the game. Their four recorded shots on goal were mostly harmless, making it fairly easy on Trinity Western leader and goalkeeper Andrew Kowan (2nd, Richmond).
Calgary goalie #J.P. Crescenzi# (3rd, Calgary), while letting in three goals, showed some emotion and tried to rally his team on numerous occasions, but simply could not. Only four Dinos recorded shots in the game.
A positive sign moving forward for the Dinos is that it can't get much worse than that performance, and they have no choice but to shake it off and turn the page to their next opponent, the University of Fraser Valley Cascades.
The Dinos host the Cascades on the West Varsity pitch on Sunday at 2 PM. The Cascades come to Calgary after beating on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in Lethbridge on Saturday afternoon, posting a 5-2 victory.
The Trinity Western Spartans will pack up and travel south to Lethbridge to face those same Pronghorns on Sunday, who currently sit in last place in the Canada West.
