SASKATOON - Three first period goals by University of Calgary Dinos led to a 4-2 victory over the No. 2 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night in Saskatoon's Rutherford Rink.

BOX SCORE

With the win No. 9-ranked Calgary jumps to 5-2 on the season, while the Huskies, who remain in first place in the Canada West, fall to 6-4-1. Calgary sits tied for second place with the University of Alberta Golden Bears. The Huskies have split wins in every one of their meetings since starting out the season with two wins over the University of Manitoba Bisons on September 26 and 27.

“They got a jump on us in the first period and we just could get the goal back,” said Huskie head coach Dave Adolph. “This team is good and so is every team in the Canada West. It's a tough conference to play in.”

Huskie Cole Simpson opened the scoring in the game at 7:51 in the first period but Jevon Desautels scored the first Dinos goal of the period just 28 seconds later to even the tally at one. Jerrid Sauer added a goal at 18:01 in the frame and Reid Jorgensen scored just over a minute later at 19:03 for the 3-1 lead.

Calgary's lead grew to 4-1 when Brett O'Malley scored on the power play just 54 seconds into the second period. The Huskies were a man down after Steven Gillen was assessed a hooking penalty.

The Huskies tried to play catch up scoring at 7:13 in the third period on a Chris Durand goal to pull the game within two. But they couldn't get any closer.

Torrie Wheat had three assists for the Dinos, who managed to keep Saskatchewan's duo of Stevens - DaSilva and Gillen - off the scoresheet. DaSilva and Gillen are ranked one-two in conference scoring, with Wheat sitting in third spot.

Goaltender Dustin Butler was the difference in the game for the Dinos stopping 39 shots 15 in the first period. Jeff Harvey made 17 saves for the Huskies.

The teams will battle again Saturday in Saskatoon. Game time is 7 p.m.
