Shutout sinks soccer's season

VICTORIA - Sarah Treloar scored twice and assisted on another to lead the UBC Thunderbirds to a 4-0 victory over the Calgary Dinos in the Canada West championship quarterfinals. UBC will advance to play the Trinity Western Spartans in the semifinal.

The No. 5-ranked T-birds moved a step closer to an appearance at the CIS National Championships, advancing to Saturday's conference semifinal. UBC will face-off against the no. 2 seeded Spartans on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. The UVic Vikes will face the Manitoba Bisons in the other semifinal, getting underway at 12 p.m.

After a scoreless first half, UBC wasted little time putting points on the board in the second. Midfielder Sarah Treloar scored a pair of goals in a span of less than 10 minutes, to stake her T-birds to a 2-0 lead.

Just two minutes after play resumed in the second half, Terloar opened the game's scoring with a header into the back of the net. Defender Michelle Yakashiro set-up the score, lofting the bal into the goal area on a corner attempt. Treloar's second goal came in the 54th minute, with Kelly Isberg setting up the score on a well-played low ball.

UBC remained quiet until the later stages of the game with Chelsea Stang scoring in the 72nd minute and Zarina Giannone striking in the 79th minute. Treloar set-up the final goal, taking advantage of a poor Calgary clearance attempt and finding a wide open Giannone.

The first half ended without a score. Shots were equal 3-3, but UBC proved themselves the aggressors by containing the majority of the action in Calgary's end. However, it was the Dinos who generated the best scoring opportunity of the half. Midfielder Lindsay Burrowes rifled a free kick attempt high and forced T-ibrds 'keeper Jaclyn Dunnett to make a brilliant save.

Dunnett was called upon to make nine saves to record the shutout. During the regular season the Burnaby native led the Canada West with nine shutouts in 14 games. Her counterpart on the afternoon, Calgary 'keeper Kristen Barton made 11 saves.

With the loss, Calgary is eliminated from the 2008 post-season.
