Huskies nab shutout under the lights

| By:

SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies knocked off the University of Calgary Dinos 2-0 under the lights at PotashCorp Park in Saskatoon Friday night.

The Huskies (4-8-1) move up to 13 points on the season after defeating the Dinos, and pull within just two points of both Calgary (4-6-3) and the University of Lethbridge (4-6-3) for the final playoff spot in the Canada West Conference. This sets up a must-win situation for the Dinos on Sunday afternoon as they close the season in Edmonton against the Alberta Pandas.

The Huskies opened the scoring towards the latter portion of the first half, as Jocelyn Fetter placed the ball over a Dino keeper who had been forced out of position earlier in the play. Sarah Laverty assisted the goal.

The second half saw a more defensive Huskie side, as Saskatchewan were well aware of the potential three points that would come their way if they were able to keep the Dinos off the scoreboard.

Near the end of the match, at around the 80th minute mark, the Huskies all but sealed the victory with a goal by Kaitlyn Johnson, assisted by Kristy Husulak.

"In the second half we put forth a strong defensive effort to hold on to the win," said Huskie head coach Tom LaPointe. "I was really proud of them tonight."

Keeper Alicia Carter earned the shutout, playing in her first-ever CIS game.

The Huskies will host Lethbridge on Sunday, while Calgary travels to Edmonton to meet the University of Alberta Pandas. These games will decide the final playoff spot.
