SASKATCHEWAN - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies did what they could to help their playoff push with a 2-1 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos 2-1 at Potash Corp Park in Saskatoon.
But the University of Alberta Golden Bears pulled off a 3-0 victory over the University of Lethbridge in Edmonton to secure the final spot in the playoffs the Huskies were looking for. The win was the third in the row for the Huskies.
"We knew that it was going to be tough to win all of our remaining game and for Alberta to lose," said Bryce Chapman. "We are a young team that is growing. We had six wins this season and that's the most we've ever had."
The Huskies opened the scoring in the 41st minute as Josh Northey netted his 7th on the campaign. Jerson Barandica-Hamilton followed Northey's goal shortly after with one of his own in the 45th minute.
Northey's mark was assisted by Barandica-Hamilton as he was sent a leading pass and slid the ball past Calgary keeper #J.P. Crescenzi# from the corner of the D. Northey returned the favour, assisting Barandica-Hamilton on his goal with a pass across the front of the goal mouth.
Calgary cut the deficit in half in the 70th minute, as Alex Hanne made a run beating several Huskie defenders on the play and beating keeper Mark Diakiw.
With the win the Huskies move to 5-6-2 and 17 points of the season, just three short of the final playoff spot. Calgary dropped to 2-8-3 and sits in in seventh place with nine points on the season.
The Dinos will travel to Edmonton to take on the Golden Bears, while the Huskies will host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in their last game of the Canada West season.
