Nothing doing as Dinos tie up T-Birds

| By:

CALGARY – A defensive struggle it was on a cold day in Calgary, as the UBC Thunderbirds and the University of Calgary Dinos tie 0-0.

UBC, ranked second in the country behind Carleton University and currently tied for first place in Canada West with the University of Victoria Vikes, were visibly frustrated on a day where they could mount no significant offensive pressure. The T-Birds only managed three shots on goal against Dinos goaltender #J.P. Crescenzi#, who was once again clutch in net for Calgary.

Not to be outdone however was UBC goalkeeper Srdjan Djekanovic, who continued his stellar play in net, making five saves and looking unflappable on UBC's back end. After holding Calgary to zero goals, Djekanovic now holds a ridiculous Goals Against Average (GAA) of 0.44 on the season, which leads the conference by a wide margin.

Calgary coach Andy Gibbs surely would have liked to eke out a victory against UBC, but was overall very pleased with the result.

“You know what; they (the Dinos) played really hard. I really don't think we gave the best team in the country a shot today,” said Gibbs. “We had some entertaining opportunities at the end which would have given us the game, but the ball got caught up. Overall we kept them frustrated and we played really well.”

Certainly not helped by a suffocating UBC defense, the Dinos still have not figured out their offensive struggles on the year. Saturday marks Calgary's third straight game without a goal. Jeremy Jenkyns and David Bird had two great breakaway chances near the end of the match, but neither was able to get a shot off.

The Thunderbirds quickly found themselves in a tough fight on the afternoon, and struggled to find chances in front of the Calgary net. While only recording three shots on goal, UBC still managed to swarm the Calgary net frequently, but could not catch a break all afternoon. Often yelling at each other and the referee, frustration may have gotten the best of UBC, who seemed very disappointed with the end result.

The T-Birds will be happy to know that they have lost no ground in their fight for first place in Canada West, as the Victoria Vikes had an identical 0-0 result in Lethbridge against the Pronghorns. UBC will now travel south, and will get their shot at the 'Horns on Sunday afternoon in Lethbridge.

Calgary will stay at home on Sunday and invite the Vikes up from Lethbridge. The Vikes will surely be looking to rebound against the Dinos after what was a fairly surprising result against the Pronghorns.
