Late goal lifts Dinos to upset of Vikes

| By:
VICTORIA - With just three minutes remaining in regulation, the Calgary Dinos scored to pull off a 2-1 upset against the UVic Vikes women's field hockey team. The Vikes loss concedes the Canada West conference championship title to the UBC Thunderbirds for a sixth straight year.

Calgary's Michelle Roydhouse pocketed the game-winning goal in the 67th minute, delivering her Dinos squad their second win of the season. While Calgary is eliminated from post-season contention, the team improves to 2-7-2 for the Dinos' best regular season record since 2003.

The game-winning goal came on a Calgary short corner attempt with Vikes 'keeper Kaitlyn Williams making the initial save, but an unlucky bounce gave Roydhouse a wide open net. The Vikes attacked aggressively over the final three minutes but were unable to foil Calgary 'keeper Stephanie Petrowitsch, who was phenomenal in goal.

Calgary had opened in the scoring in the game's 19th minute. After failing to score on their previous three short corner attempts, the Dinos efforts finally paid off with Kaitlyn Longworth tipping the ball into the net.

The Vikes earned the equalizer before the half expired, with Sumeet Aujla scoring in the 31st minute. Aujla was the beneficiary of a centering pass from midfielder Ali Lee, and made no mistake with a low hard shot into the bottom corner.

The loss drops the Vikes record to 5-4-2 and gives them no chance of catching the first place T-birds for the regular season crown. The Vikes will look to rebound on Sunday, when they rematch versus Calgary for the regular season finale. Game time is 11 a.m. at the UVic Field Hockey Turf.
