CALGARY - Kaitlyn Longworth (2nd, Calgary) was not alright with the Dinos field hockey team's fate being determined in the middle of the season. Her play simply spoke for itself as she, along with Courtney Campbell (2nd, Calgary) scored three huge goals as the Dinos beat the Alberta Pandas this past Sunday, earning the weekend split in Edmonton.
The weekend split not only kept the Dinos' playoff hopes alive, but it created a sense of confidence and optimism amongst the club as they invite the powerful UBC Thunderbirds to Hawkings Field at the U of C this weekend.
The T-Birds come to Calgary after a hard fought weekend split against fellow Canada West powerhouse Victoria. After beating the Vikes in first game 1-0, they lost 2-1 on Sunday. However with their one victory, UBC maintained their spot on the top of the standings. Having already suffered two losses to the T-Birds this season, including a humiliating 8-0 defeat, the Dinos are most certainly the underdog this weekend.
Victories for both clubs are certainly always important, as UBC would love to end the season in first, however it is Calgary that has the most to gain with a victory. A victory versus the BC powerhouse would put them in a much better position for a late season playoff charge, as their main competition, Alberta is only three points ahead of them. With a weekend series against those Pandas around the corner, taking one versus UBC would create significant momentum going forward.
The Dinos are now on the right track. If Longworth and Campbell can keep up their strong play, and if goalie Stephanie Petrowitsch (1st, Calgary) can build off of her strong performance, they should be able to stay competitive with UBC.
Gametime is 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Hawkings Field on the UC campus.
