Gen Haley was moments away from being upset in the 51 kg final at this weekend’s CIS Wrestling Championships in her home Jack Simpson Gym, but turned the match around to win her fourth straight gold medal, earning CIS Outstanding Wrestler honours in the process.
Trailing by one round against Brock’s Diana Ford, Haley battled to a scoreless tie in the second round, sending it to a tiebreaking clinch. Ford was given the advantage in the clinch and had 30 seconds to score, but Haley was able to turn the tables with a spectacular Olympic lift, sending the match to a third and deciding round. Once again it was tight, but Haley was able to get position late in the round to score the winning points, taking home her fourth straight CIS gold medal.
A fourth-year student from Campbell’s Bay, Que., Haley helped her Dinos to within two points of the national team title. She is a student in the Haskayne School of Business.
