Making the first start of his CIS football career, Deke Junior was sensational as the unranked Calgary Dinos upset the No. 2 defending Vanier Cup champion Manitoba Bisons 37-17 Saturday at McMahon Stadium. The 6’, 195-pound quarterback went a sparkling 20-for-28 passing, tossing two touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also added 34 yards on seven carries along the ground.

He averaged 14.1 yards per completion, leading the Dinos back from a three-point halftime deficit thanks in large part to a 20-point third quarter. His touchdown passes, both to Anthony Parker, came from 58 and 16 yards.

In his fourth year of eligibility, Junior joined the Dinos this year from the Regina Thunder of the PFC, which he led in passing yards last season with 2,488. He played much of the second half in Calgary’s season opener, earning the starting spot en route to Calgary’s rout of the Bisons, which snapped an 18-game regular season win streak for the defending champs. The Regina, Sask. native is enrolled in the Open Studies program at the University of Calgary.
