OTTAWA —
Gabriela Cross and
Joseph De Maio of the University of Calgary Dinos wrestling program were named to the Team Canada 2026 U23 Pan-Am Wrestling Championships, taking place June 11-13 in Lima, Peru. The complete roster was announced Tuesday by Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL).
"Wrestling Canada Lutte is excited to see one of our youngest U23 teams test themselves against some of the top athletes in the Pan American region," said Chris Woodcroft, WCL High Performance Director. "For many members of this team, this will be their first opportunity to represent Canada internationally, making this a significant step in their development. Providing athletes with meaningful international competition experience is essential to their long-term growth, and building a deeper pool of internationally tested athletes will be a key factor in strengthening our performances in the years ahead."
This marks the third straight appearance at the U23 Pan-Ams for Cross. She has previously medalled in both of her appearances, having captured bronze in 2024 and silver in 2025. Now, she will look to win the last medal that has eluded her a gold in 2026 as she competes at 57kg.
Cross is a three-time U SPORTS and four-time Canada West champion. The four-time Academic All-Canadian also has been named the U SPORTS Outstanding Wrestler of the Year (2025), Dinos Female Athlete of the Year (2024-25) and was recently named one of the Top 8 Academic All-Canadians in all of Canada in 2024-25.
De Maio continues to be a force for the Dinos men's squad. The fourth-year wrestler finished runner-up at this year's conference meet in 90kg before coming in fifth overall at the same weight class at nationals.
