Huskies scores late to spoil Seniors Night

CALGARY – Goaltender Colby Wilson stopped all 20 shots she faced as the Saskatchewan Huskies blanked the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team 3-0 on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

After a 7-6 shootout win by Calgary on Friday, the rematch remained scoreless through two periods and deep into the third. Saskatchewan struck three times in the final five minutes to spoil Seniors Night, as the Dinos honoured eight graduating players prior to puck drop.

Saturday marked the final regular-season home game for Brooklyn Anderson, Brette Kerley, Jess Martens, Josie McLeod, Sydney Mercier, Bridget Rezansoff, Alex Spence, and Emma Tait.

Despite the loss, Calgary remains second in the Canada West East Division at 16-6-4. Saskatchewan improved to 11-9-6 and remains tied with Manitoba at 28 points.

"I think we're going to move on," said Dinos head coach Josh Gosling. "I didn't love the way we played, so it's a good opportunity for us to take another step and start refocusing."

The opening 40 minutes featured strong goaltending at both ends. Dinos rookie Alyssa Barrette and Wilson were sharp throughout, turning aside quality chances in a tightly checked, scoreless contest.

The special teams also had a chance to shine, with eight power play chances totaled by the team squads. Both penalty-kill units were effective, keeping the game deadlocked and maintaining an even tempo.

This even-paced battle would soon come to a staggering halt in the final five minutes of the game, as Huskies players Jessica Anderson, Jayde Cadieux, and Kahlen Wisener all recorded goals.

Calgary pushed late but was unable to solve Wilson, who recorded her shutout behind a composed defensive effort.

The Dinos close the regular season next weekend on the road against the Manitoba Bisons. Saskatchewan returns home to host the Mount Royal Cougars. Both series run Feb. 13-14.
