Dinos fall in Crowchild showdown

CALGARY – The banged-up University of Calgary Dinos never quite got on track in a 3-0 loss to Mount Royal Saturday afternoon from Kenyon Court.

The win is a big one for the Cougars as they move to 9-9 on the year and in a tie for seventh place in the league standings with two games to play. Meanwhile, the Dinos drop to 6-12 and are tied with Thompson Rivers for the 10th and final playoff spot heading into next weekend's showdown with TRU.

Will Kay led the way for Calgary with 12 kills on just 15 swings for an impressive .667 hitting clip, while twin brother Sam Kay added 11 kills to go with six digs. Zack Durrant dished out 23 assists on the night for the Dinos.

Kale Orr led the Cougars with 13 kills while hitting .435. Grant Hill ran a smooth offence on the night, dishing out 28 assists.

MRU was able to jump out in front early in the opener and they never looked back. The home team led 7-2 early and was able to extend things to 20-13 late. A service ace from rookie Cam Hutt late cut the gap, but the Dinos couldn't get over the hump in dropping set one.

It was a big second set for the Kay brothers, with a kill from Will capping a 4-1 run and giving the Scarlet & Gold a 14-13 lead. Things would stay tight the rest of the way, but the Cougars were able to just enough down the stretch for the 2-0 lead.

After the two teams traded the first 14 points, MRU slowly pulled away from the banged up Dinos to finish off the sweep.

Calgary closes out the regular season on home court next weekend, taking on Thompson Rivers for two games inside the Jack Simpson Gym Friday and Saturday.
