CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team will have to wait one more day to learn its playoff path.
Calgary dropped a 3-0 decision to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack (25-19, 25-9, 25-18) on Friday night at the Jack Simpson Gym.
The Dinos remain in eighth place in the Canada West standings with one match left. MacEwan and Winnipeg sit one win back. A victory Saturday would secure a home play-in series. A loss would likely send Calgary on the road to open the postseason.
"We didn't play to the standard we know we're capable of tonight," said head coach
Christine Biggs. "We'll regroup and be ready to show what we're capable of tomorrow."
TRU opened the scoring in the first set and found its rhythm early, but the Dinos responded with composed play. Middle blocker
Ashley Ditchfield put Calgary on the board with a strong kill, while setter
Anya Fehr distributed the offence effectively, establishing her middles and creating opportunities at the net. The WolfPack scored the final three points of the set to take it 25-19.
In the second set, the WolfPack jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Outside hitter
Sophia Hansen answered with a kill to get the Dinos on the board, but TRU continued to apply pressure from the service line, extending its advantage to 15-3. Despite the deficit, Calgary showed resilience. Libero
Courtney Webber came up with a series of impressive digs to keep rallies alive and maintain the team's energy. A well-timed double block from
Leni Blanke and Ditchfield highlighted the Dinos' push to shift momentum, but TRU closed out the set 25-9 to take a two-set lead.
Calgary delivered its strongest stretch of the night in the third. Hansen led the charge offensively with multiple kills, keeping the Dinos within striking distance.
Kalyssa Komori added a clutch kill down the line to give Calgary a 6-5 edge, and the Dinos later grabbed a 15-13 lead midway through the set. Steady serving from Webber and another key swing from Hansen helped fuel the run as Calgary dictated the tempo.
The Dinos showed composure and grit, pushing the WolfPack deeper into the set than at any other point in the match. TRU responded late to secure the straight-sets win.
Hail Ward led all players with 15 kills for TRU. Keira Gent added 10, and Myah Cressy recorded five blocks.
Hansen paced Calgary with 11 kills, while Ditchfield finished with three blocks.
The teams wrap up the regular season Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Jack Simpson Gym.
