BOX SCORE WINNIPEG — The University of Calgary Dinos are moving on in the Canada West postseason after a win in the conference play-in game Friday afternoon over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.
Hayden Franson had a double-double and the Dinos used a 26-12 second quarter to overcome an early deficit to beat the Wolfpack 70-66 at the Duckworth Centre, setting up a quarter-final match-up with the top-seeded Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday.
Franson scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds as the No. 9-seed Dinos rallied from an early nine-point gap to extend their postseason run.
Calgary trailed 25-16 two minutes into the second quarter but put together a 15-0 run over the next three and a half minutes, and never trailed again.
The No. 8 seed Wolfpack, who trailed 42-31 at the half and fell behind 13 early in the third, were able to cut Calgary's lead to two with 3:43 to go in the third with an 11-0 run. The Dinos, however, responded with a 10-2 run to close the quarter.
TRU had one last push in the fourth quarter, trailing by 10 with just over four minutes left, the Wolfpack got the lead down to four and got consecutive stops only to follow those with back-to-back turnovers.
Daniels Baumanis scored 14 points, and
Mrigendra Dhaliwal and
Dre Francis both added 12 with Francis also grabbing 12 rebounds.
Calgary out-rebounded the Wolfpack 45-33.
Cason Scott paced the Wolfpack with 16 points, while Jayden Stephens added 15. Steve Stinson and Dami Farinloye both scored 10.
