The annual Crowchild Classic is here as the University of Calgary Dinos hockey teams take on Mount Royal Thursday afternoon, starting with the women's contest at 4:30 p.m. inside the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Dinos and Cougars will square off one more time on the weekend, facing off inside Father David Bauer Arena Saturday at 5 p.m.
With just six games left in the regular season, the Dinos are still in the hunt for the top spot in the division and a first-round bye in the playoffs. Calgary sits at 13-5-4 through 22 games for 30 points, with only MRU sitting ahead of them with 37 points through 24 games played.
All three of Calgary's goaltenders have been a huge story for why they've had so much success this season, with both veteran Amelia Awad and rookie Maisie Cope ranked 1-2 in conference and in the top-five nationally in save percentage. Fellow newcomer Alyssa Barrett also has done well in limited action in her first season on campus.
Mount Royal comes into this year's Crowchild Classic ranked No. 7 in the country. They are coming off a home weekend split with Regina, where the UofR got a huge performance from Amy Swayze who racked up 42 saves in the upset win.
It has been a spirited battle between the two city rivals over recent years. The two teams have already played four times earlier this season, with MRU claiming three of those four. Inside the Saddledome, Calgary is 8-3 all-time and has won five of the last six, including last year's shootout win.

Following the women's game, the Dinos men's hockey team will take the ice at the Saddledome for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop against Mount Royal. Saturday's rematch at MRU's home ice is set for 5 p.m. Saturday.
After a week off, the Dinos are looking to bounce back from a home weekend sweep at the hand of UBC. That marked the first back-to-back losses all season by Calgary, who enters Thursday's showdown at 17-5 and ranked ninth in the latest U SPORTS poll.
Mount Royal is ranked ranked fourth in this week's top-10 and has been red hot since the start of the second semester. In their six games after the break, the Cougars are 5-1 with a weekend sweep at UBC, a home split with Saskatchewan and a weekend thrashing of Regina this last time out that saw them outscore the other Cougars 21-3.
Calgary and Mount Royal split the first two weekend series so far this regular season, with the Dinos claiming both openers before MRU bounced back with a win on both Saturdays. In last year's battle inside the 'Dome, the Dinos cruised to a convincing 4-0 win to give them a 6-5 edge in the all-time series.

Calgary's women's basketball team (12-4) hosts provincial rivals Alberta (13-3) for two games inside the Jack Simpson Gym this Friday and Saturday, with tipoffs set for 6 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
The Dinos have been snakebitten by cold shooting in their four losses this season, coming off a weekend sweep at the hands of No. 1 Saskatchewan where they shot 29% in the opener only to go 13-55 (23.6%) in Saturday's rematch. Calgary's defence has more than made up for their offence cold spurts the majority of the way, allowing on average just 55.8 points per game. The Dinos have held their opponents under 50 points four times this season including limiting MacEwan to just 21 points earlier this month.
Alberta comes to Calgary's campus with a 13-3 record after handing Regina its first loss of the season last time out. The Pandas sit one spot ahead of the Dinos in the loaded Prairie Division with four games left in the regular season.
The Dinos are just 2-8 in their last 10 regular season matchups against the Pandas. Last season, Alberta claimed a pair of close contests in Edmonton. Calgary's last win in the series was Dec. 1, 2023 inside The Jack.
Dinos Men's Basketball (10-6)

Saturday, Jan. 31 | Calgary vs. Alberta | Jack Simpson Gym | 6:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
It's another Battle of Alberta this weekend, as the Dinos men's hoops team looks to keep things rolling when they take on the Golden Bears inside the Jack Simpson Gym. Friday's tip time is set for 8 p.m., while Saturday's start is scheduled for 6 p.m. Both games follow the women's competitions.
Calgary has won five of its last six since the start of the second semester, outscoring their opponents by an average score of 88.5-76.0 over that run. That is a significant offensive improvement for the Dinos, who saw flashes of that in the first semester but have really found their rhythm so far over the last month, with seemingly all players finding their roles in the balanced attack.
Alberta sits at 11-5 - one game ahead of Calgary in the divisional standings with four games to play. The Bears have split weekend series at home against Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as on the road against Manitoba so far this month after an 8-2 start to the regular season.
The Dinos have won the last five overall against Alberta, including sweeping their last two regular-season weekend sets. A season ago, Calgary earned wins by 11 and 19 points in Edmonton after wins by eight and 20 points in Calgary the year prior.

Both Calgary squads were ranked in the U SPORTS top 10 in the most recent rankings, with the Dinos men voted as the No. 2 team in the nation, while the women were ranked fourth.
Following this weekend's home meet, the Dinos will be off until March 12-14 when they travel to Markham, Ont., for the 2026 U SPORTS Championships, hosted this year by McMaster University.
