UBC spoils Cope's big night in OT

VANCOUVER – Despite a herculean effort in net from first-year Maisie Cope, UBC walked away with a 3-2 overtime win over the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team Saturday afternoon from the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

Cope - a native of Victoria, B.C. and playing her first game for the Dinos in her home province - was incredible in net for Calgary, racking up a remarkable 55 saves - many of them highlight worthy.

But Ashton Thorpe converted a pinpoint feed from Grace Elliot on a two-on-one at 2:18 in the extra frame to give UBC the win.

The top-ranked Thunderbirds move to 20-2 on the year, while Calgary drops to 13-5-4.

The fact the game even made it to overtime was a testament to Cope, who stopped all 16 UBC shots in the first period.

The T-Birds finally hit the scoresheet at 4:04 of the second, when Hanna Perrier deftly deflected a Kailee Pepper point shot underneath the pads of Cope.

Calgary tied the game up at 6:28 when April Klarebach made a nifty forehand to backhand deke out of the corner to beat UBC goalie, Elise Hugens.

UBC re-took the lead at 12:05 on the power play, when Elliott poked home a puck from a scrum of humanity in front of the Dino goal. It was just the kind of greasy goal that UBC needed to break Cope's voodoo, as she made another 20 saves in the second period alone.

Calgary was able to tie the game up at 4:08 of the third period, when Evelyn Lawrence converted a nifty cross seam pass from Brooklyn Anderson on a Dinos power play, setting the game up for its fantastic overtime finish.

The Dinos are now off until they take the ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome Jan. 29 for the annual Crowchild Classic.
