EDMONTON – The University of Calgary Dinos women's curling team got off to a strong start at the 2026 Canada West Curling Championships inside the Saville Centre Thursday.
The Dinos picked up big wins in their first two draws before suffering a nail-biting loss in the nightcap and sit at 2-1 after the first of three opening days of action.
Draw 1 – vs. Lethbridge
It was a perfect start for the Dinos in a convincing opening win over Lethbridge. Calgary scored three in the first end of the championship and never looked back, scoring in four of the next five ends – highlighted by a five-spot in the fifth – to walk away with an 11-1 victory in the opener.
Draw 2 – vs. Victoria
After the lopsided opener, Calgary showed it could win close against Victoria in the second draw. The Vikes were first on the board before the Dinos tied things up in the third. Trailing by one going into the final end,
Ava Koe used the hammer to her advantage to take two in the eighth and walk away with a 4-3 comeback win.
Draw 3 – vs. Regina
The Dinos suffered their first loss of the tournament in the finale against the reigning conference champion in Regina. Trailing 4-0 after two, Calgary rallied with a pair in both the third and fourth for a 4-3 advantage. The Cougars had a big showing in the fifth, taking three, and added another in the sixth. But the Dinos refused to go down quietly, answering back with two in the sixth to draw within one and had a rock on the button in the eighth but Regina was able to clear with the hammer to secure the win.
Day 2 has the Dinos scheduled for two more head-to-head showdowns, starting at 9 AM against UBCO before a 7 PM draw against Brandon.
