Offence erupts for eight goals in rout of Regina

CALGARY –  Jess Martens, Josie McLeod, and captain Brooklyn Anderson each scored two goals as the University of Calgary Dinos poured in a season-high eight goals in an 8-4 win over the Regina Cougars from Father David Bauer Arena.

Between both teams, nine different players found the back of the net Saturday evening, with 12 additional players picking up assists in the goal-fest of a game.

"It's really exciting, but I'm just happy that we can get the win," said Dinos fifth-year Josie McLeod on her first and second goals of the season. "I think we weren't getting a lot of luck yesterday and it just all came together today, so that was really exciting."

Added Dinos head coach Josh Gosling, "I think collectively we played better yesterday and I know we talked about the maturity of pulling [the win] off yesterday. Today we got some bounces early and I liked that we were able to answer once it hit 4-4. I think that's when we actually started to play hockey, so I'm happy that we pulled it out."

The scoring started early and often for the home team. Riding off a two-goal game Friday night, Jess Martens was right back in the saddle getting the first of the game while shorthanded. An awkward bounce off the back boards had the puck landing on Martens' tape, making no mistake finding the netting behind Cougars goaltender Natalie Williamson.

A quick deke around the Cougars from Sydney Mercier followed by McLeod's first of the season off a right circle snipe would go to put the home team at a 3-0 advantage by the end of the first 20 minutes.

However, it didn't take long for the visitors to make their first mark of the night. Just one minute into the second period was when Shaylee Scraba struck on the penalty kill, potting one behind Alyssa Barrette and shortening the Dinos lead to 3-1.

Just over a minute later, Anderson regained the three-goal lead with a snipe down the centre lane.

A power play marker at 5:29 would give Regina some momentum, scoring three consecutive goals in under five minutes and tying the game at 4-4 halfway through the second period.

As quickly as the momentum swung toward Regina in the sudden reverse of score, the Dinos flipped things in their direction once again as the scoring continued. Brette Kerley broke the tie at 12:17 and was followed closely by McLeod, Anderson, and Martens, scoring the remaining goals approximately two minutes apart each, finalizing the 8-4 score before the final frame had even begun.

"Our big players pulled us out and Jess has been a driver for us this year," said Gosling. "She came back off an injury and showed that we missed her when she was injured and she pulled the rope today. [Anderson] was kind of fighting through it and she gave us everything she had. I think that they bought in and they dialed in on owning the creases and we had some successes with that."

Up next, the Dinos hit the road next weekend with a trip to Vancouver to take on UBC.

"Just bringing our habits and coming to the game ready to play," said McLeod of the upcoming road trip. "UBC is always a really fun and exciting game to play, so I have no doubts we'll show up and play well."

Added Gosling, "Just little details. We were better at blocking shots in the back half of that game, but just the little details on how we're going to defend, how we're going to keep them to the outside and we're looking forward to the battle."
