REGINA – A late fleury of action saw the University of Calgary Dinos skate away with a convincing 5-2 win over Regina Saturday afternoon from The Co-operator's Place.
Calgary – the third-ranked team in the latest U SPORTS national rankings – finishes the weekend sweep on the road and improves to 16-3 on the year. Regina falls to 2-15.
Much like Friday's affair, it didn't take long for the Dinos to find the back of the net in this one, with
Connor Horning tallying his sixth of the season just over six minutes into the game. Horning got behind his defender and calmly tapped home a centering feed from
Jacksenn Hungle for the 1-0 lead.
Calgary doubled its lead less than 10 minutes later, getting a favourable bounce to help things out. The Dinos pounced on a loose puck at the blue line and quickly had a 3-on-2 advantage.
Logen Hammett's shot went off the knee of a Cougar defender and rainbowed over Dylan Ernst, with
Davis Fry and Hungle once again setting up the play.
Carl Tetachuk made an early mark on this one just a few minutes later as the veteran goaltender made back-to-back huge saves to keep the Dinos lead at 2-0 at the first intermission.
The luck of the bounce went the other way early in the second to put Regina on the scoreboard. A clearing pass from the Dinos in their own zone took a deflection off a leg and set the Cougars up for an immediate 2-on-none point blank. Jackson Doucet fed Eric Houk who did not miss for his second goal in as many games.
Jake Poole put the Dinos back up by two in the opening seconds of the third period to put Calgary back ahead 3-1. Regina once again refused to go away as Houk continued his hot weekend with his second goal of the night to draw back to 3-2 with 3:02 to play.
Gavin Schmidt hammered home a beautiful pass from
Stephen Kirkpatrick with 52 seconds left before
Adam Kydd scored an empty netter to put this one to bed. That moves Kydd's nation-leading point total to 37.
Up next, the Dinos return home for a heavyweight tilt against UBC both Friday and Saturday from Father David Bauer Arena.
