CALGARY – Powered by a strong final day of competition, the University of Calgary men's and women's team both turned in comeback performances to bring home the team trophies and sweep their home invite Monday from Springbank Links Golf Club.
Adam Reed led the way for the Dinos men by bringing home gold. The third-year Business major opened with a +3 (74) before being the lone golfer to shoot under par on Monday at -2 (69). His 74-69-143 (+1) was three strokes ahead of both Ethan Howes (70-76-146) and Kai Baerg (71-75-146) for the best finish at the tournament.
While Reed was the lone Dinos medallist, it was the strong second day performances by
Sam Bratvold (72-72-150),
Saahil Kaura (76-75-151) and
Roman Miller (86-74-160) to help Calgary flip an 18-stroke deficit following Day 1 into a one-stroke win on Monday. Calgary finished with a team score of +27, while Alberta finished +28. Regina shot a +54 as a squad, while Lethbridge rounded out the scoring at +106.
On the women's side, it was Calgary rookie
Brooke Tombs continuing to announce her arrival to the U SPORTS game. The Kelowna, B.C., product held a two-stroke lead after Day 1 and never let go, finishing with a 79-80-159 (+17) to win by three shots. Alberta's Kalee Seto (81-81-162) and Anna Kibria (86-78-164) brought home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Much like the men's team race, the Dinos women erased a Day 1 deficit to overtake Alberta by one for the final finish at their home tournament.
Georgia Mackenzie (82-85-167) tied for fourth, with rookie
Kristin McGeachie (93-80-173) and
Norah Andronyk (91-84-175) placed sixth and eighth, respectively, to lower their team's score for the win.
The Dinos are right back in action next weekend for the UofA Invitational in Edmonton, hosted at Millwoods Golf Course, starting Sunday.
