Dinos trio set to represent Team Canada

CALGARY – Three members of the University of Calgary Dinos track & field program are set to represent Team Canada at the upcoming 2025 International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games in Germany.

Head coach Jessica Zelinka, administrative coordinator Matt Deans and third-year sprinter Georgia Oland are all set to head to this year's Rhine-Ruhr Summer Games to compete as part of Team Canada.

Zelinka is no stranger to major international sporting events. The former combined events star competed in both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games in the heptathlon. The former Dino athlete just finished her fourth season coaching her alma mater, being named the U SPORTS Women's Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2024. Zelinka will coach the sprints/hurdles group at this year's games.

Deans – who also just completed his fourth season with the Dinos – joins the 10-person staff at this year's FISU Games as manager, helping oversee a litany of items with the 50-person roster.

On the track, Oland will compete in both the 100m and 200m and is in the pool for the 4x100m relay. The Calgary native just completed her third season in the Scarlet & Gold where she was crowned Canada West champion in the 300m. She also brought home bronze in the 60m and helped both the 4x200m and 4x400m relay squads bring home bronze at this year's conference championships. Oland also was named the recipient of both the U SPORTS and Canada West Student-Athlete Community Service Award for her work off the track.

Team Canada is making its return to the FISU Summer World University Games, after missing the 2023 event. The 2025 edition will be staged in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region of Germany, with athletics taking place July 21-27 in Bochum, Germany.

Team Canada has won 83 medals all-time (10 gold, 40 silver, 33 bronze) in athletics at the  at the FISU Summer World University Games, dating back to the first-ever Canadian medal, won by George Puce in discuss at the 1965 Universiade in Budapest. At Naples 2019, Canada won three medals in athletics, including Canada's only gold of the games, by Sarah Mitton in the shot put.
